1. Shop smart

Only buy the amount you can use in a timely manner. Therefore, plan your shopping carefully and consider whether you really need the product before reaching for it. A shopping list or app can help you and your roommates organize your shopping.

2. Store food properly

If you store your food properly, it will stay fresh longer: Follow the storage instructions on the packaging and keep perishable items in the refrigerator. Keep your refrigerator and pantry tidy and clean to keep things organized and protect your food from spoiling.

Our tip: Place food that will be consumed soon at the front of the fridge so that it doesn't get forgotten.

3. Interpret best before dates correctly

Food is often edible longer than the date on the packaging indicates. Instead of relying on the best-before date ("best before"), trust your senses: If the food still looks good and smells good after the expiration date, taste it to see if it still tastes good. However, products with a use-by date ("use by") should definitely be consumed or frozen by the date indicated.

“Best before” does not mean “toxic after”

4. Cook creatively and use everything

Weigh or measure the ideal portions when cooking. Use foods in their entirety—from stalk to leaf. Be creative with what you have in your pantry and leftovers, or search for suitable recipes.

5. Share the joy of eating

Invite friends and family and share your food-saving recipes with them. Become a member of foodwaste.ch, exchange ideas with like-minded people, and follow Secend on social media to stay up to date on exciting topics and not miss out on any deals.
